NBA Finals 2019: Kevin Durant plans to play in Game 5, but the Warriors’ fate still rests on Steph Curry’s shoulders

With the Golden State Warriors on the brink of elimination trailing 3-1 to the Toronto Raptors, Kevin Durant plans to play in Game 5 on Monday night, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowksi.

Assuming nothing changes between now and game time, Durant will be making his first appearance since Game 5 of the conference semifinals more than a month ago. The Raptors have completely controlled this series and now have a 91-percent chance of winning the title, but nobody’s counting the Warriors out, especially not with this news.

That said, it’s a mistake to think that Durant — who will almost certainly be less than 100 percent and likely rusty, out of rhythm and in poor conditioning from so much time off — can just plop back into the lineup and magically turn Golden State back into a super-team. Fact is, they were 6-4 in the playoffs in the 10 full games he played, and they were in danger of going down 3-2 to the Rockets when he went down. And that was full-strength Durant.

Which is to say: this is still largely on Steph Curry’s shoulders.

The load will be lighter with Durant in the fold, no question. But perhaps the biggest mistake the Warriors, and Curry himself, made in Game 4 was thinking the return of Klay Thompson was enough to send Curry back to his usual, egalitarian, largely off-ball role. This could’ve been the influence of Steve Kerr, who simply will not budge from his stance that the Warriors are better off when everyone’s involved, even if that often reduces one of the greatest scorers of all-time to a decoy while lesser playmakers determine the Warriors’ fate.

This also could’ve been Curry being overly generous.

If not downright passive. Complacent. Tired.

And just flat out not good enough.

Either way, it can’t happen again. Not with the title, and perhaps the end of a dynasty, on the line. Durant is going to give Curry some more breathing room, but it’s on Curry to take advantage. The Warriors would be doing Curry a service to play him on-ball a bit more even with Durant back and the ball-and-player movement ethos presumably back in full effect. Give Curry the ball. Trust that he’ll make the right play. If he’s an all-time great player, this is his time. He has to be better than he was in Game 4, but the Warriors also have to prioritize putting him in position to do so.

The Raptors are making it tough, no doubt. They’re blitzing pick and rolls. They’re sometimes sending a second defender even when Curry’s isolating. They’re putting Kawhi Leonard on Draymond Green so he can switch onto Curry on ball screens. But with Durant back, all that attention on Curry is going to come at a steep price. Besides that, were the Raptors not doing these things in Game 3 when, outside of Curry, there were no other scoring threats to worry about? Curry put 47 on Toronto in that game and it was all about his mindset. He knew he had to score, or at least be the one to create the majority of the offense. He was aggressive from the jump.

Here are four of the Warriors’ first five Game 3 possessions:

YouTube Video

That is Stephen Curry at his best. Pedal to the floor. Hunting his shot. Letting everything else trickle down from there. This was a very clear and concerted game plan to establish Curry above all else, to make getting him going the top priority. Yes, the Warriors still lost this game. But Thompson and Durant were out. Get Curry loose like this with both those guys back, and that’s a version of this team team that can get back in this series, if not win it.

Ultimately, this is Curry’s responsibility. He has a license to do whatever he wants on the court. He has to take ownership of his involvement, and tangible impact, as well. And his teammates shouldn’t need an explicit instruction from the coach to understand Curry needs to be as much of a centerpiece of their attack as possible.

In Game 4, none of these things happened. Kerr didn’t run frequent plays for Curry, or even just put the ball in his hands in position to dictate his usage; too often it’s other guys bringing the ball up the court. Curry, for his part, was often too passive hanging out off the ball, and when he eventually got it and moved it as part of the offense, he didn’t make it a point to move as hard as he usually does to get it back. And finally, his teammates tried to do too much — understanding this is also part of what makes Golden State great — rather than curbing the freedom Kerr affords his whole team in the interest of giving their best current player the ball.

After we saw Curry come out gunning in Game 3, this was the first possession of Game 4.

YouTube Video

Again, this is the first possession of the game, coming off a 47-point effort, and Curry doesn’t even touch the ball. He doesn’t come off a screen. He doesn’t do anything. He stands on the weak side and watches utterly inferior ball handlers fumble their way into a turnover. Then on the second possession, it happens again. On this next clip, look how free Curry is running up the left sideline when DeMarcus Cousins, instead, opts to keep the ball and make the play himself.

YouTube Video

Now we have the Warriors’ third possession, again in transition after getting a rebound on a missed three.

YouTube Video

That’s three possessions to start what most people considered to be a must-win game, and Curry didn’t touch the ball once. All told, Curry touched the ball 84 times in Game 4. That was his lowest total of the series, in the most important game, and a far cry from the 102 touches he got in Game 3.

Here’s another early Game 4 possession in which the Warriors run their offense through Klay Thompson in the post, get nothing out of it, and ultimately have to settle for an Andre Iguodala contested mid-range jumper with Curry, once again, failing to touch the ball even one time.

The Warriors played through Thompson in the post quite a lot in the early part of Game 4. It worked in the sense that he scored a handful of baskets, and he was even (for whatever reason) drawing double teams and making plays out of them. But again, the cost of this is Curry’s involvement. If you’re the Warriors, you have to go into these games thinking you need 115 points to beat a Raptors team you haven’t proven you have the defense to stop. A couple of Klay turnarounds don’t add up in the end. Curry is the only player that can get the offense going at that rate.

By the time the second half rolled around in Game 4, Toronto was all over Curry. They blitzed him hard. They swarmed him off the ball. Perhaps those coverages are less effective if he gets cooking to start. When that happens, there isn’t a defense in the world that can contain him. But when he’s not in rhythm via the offense, and not pressing the gas himself, that’s when he becomes the Curry that looks like he has to force shots to get going against defenders he can’t consistently beat.

Again, Curry doesn’t have to shoot the ball every time. Kerr’s inclusive offense has been an all-time great for the duration of this five-year run. He knows what he’s doing, and why he’s doing it. But what works in the long run doesn’t always work in the short term, and right now, Golden State has to think short term. One possession at a time. What gives us the best chance to score on THIS possession? That answer is almost always putting the ball in Curry’s hands and letting him create, whether for himself or others.

There has been a lot of talk about the Raptors putting Kawhi on Draymond Green so that when Curry and Green run pick and roll, it’s Kawhi who switches onto Curry. This is a very logical defensive solution meant to prevent the Warriors from running one of their most potent plays, but remember: With Durant back, Kawhi will be guarding him a lot. That puts someone else on Draymond. That opens up the pick and roll with Curry.

Besides that, it’s not like Curry still can’t make plays against Kawhi. Here Golden State runs a Green-Curry pick and roll and Curry crosses Leonard up for a layup:

YouTube Video

Kawhi is one of the best defenders in the world, yes. But if Toronto thought Kawhi was enough on his own to consistently stop Curry, they wouldn’t send a second defender STILL at damn near half court, which the Warriors can then use to get the easy buckets that are coming so few and far between in this series.

There is also the option of running pick and roll with a partner other than Green, as the Warriors do here with Andrew Bogut as Green spaces to the weak side, dragging Leonard out of the play. Curry rejects the screen and gets a lane to the rim to draw a foul:

YouTube Video

The one common denominator in all thee plays is that it’s Curry bringing the ball up. Curry making the decisions, forcing the defense to react to him rather than the other way around. Steve Kerr is resolute on his belief that any team that runs the same thing over and over is making it easy on the defense, which can then, theoretically, adjust and settle in. James Harden and the Rockets make no secret of how they’re going to attack, and over time, that approach has come up short in the playoffs.

So the Warriors will continue with their diversity, and with Durant back, they will surely prioritize his offense and rhythm to some degree. But this is do-or-die time. And if you’re going to die, don’t you want it to be with the ball in the hands of the guy who gave this whole dynasty life in the first place?

A climate change paper grabbed headlines this week with its terrifying prediction of what the world will be in 30 years’ time – absent drastic and immediate change to human societies.

“World of outright chaos,” “Climate apocalypse,” “We’re all gonna die,” the media banners blared.

The sobering headlines and equally disconcerting stories beneath described a “scenario analysis” by an Australian think-tank, Breakthrough National Center for Climate Restoration.

The paper portrayed what the year 2050 will look like if urgent action to build carbon-neutral energy systems around the world fails to come to fruition in the next 10 years.

It’s worse than any of the apocalyptic Hollywood horror films making the rounds.

One billion people displaced and fighting desperately for survival, with half the world’s population subjected to “lethal heat” conditions for more than 20 days a year – “beyond the threshold of human survivability”.

Drought, wildfires, and floods collapse entire ecosystems as two billion people struggle for potable water. Mega-cities such as Mumbai, Hong Kong, Lagos, and Manila are largely abandoned because of massive floods.

Climate change aiding hurricanes in Atlantic, say US scientists

“This scenario provides a glimpse into a world of ‘outright chaos’ on a path to the end of human civilisation and modern society as we have known it,” said the paper, co-authored by Ian Dunlop, a former chair of the Australian Coal Association, and David Spratt, a long-time climate researcher.

‘The end game’

Spratt told Al Jazeera the eye-catching headlines were “somewhat over the top”, but he maintained the dire warnings were legitimate.

“We are reaching the end game, there are not a lot of pieces left on the chess board. We have to take action really fast,” said Spratt.

He challenged climate scientists, including those from the leading Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), to be more forthright with the global public about the calamity awaiting humanity if nothing is immediately done to halt the pumping of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the Earth’s atmosphere.

The planet is currently on track for a 4.5 degree Celsius increase in global temperature as CO2 emissions continue to rise each year.

Dunlop noted the IPCC set a target of staying below a 1.5C increase in the coming decades. “This IPCC analysis assumes only a 50-66 percent chance of meeting the targets. Not good odds for the future of humanity,” he wrote this week.

Asked about the criticism, IPCC’s Nina Peeva responded: “We can’t comment on individual papers on climate science. Our job is to inform policymakers about the current state of knowledge on climate change… If this paper was published in a peer-reviewed journal, it will probably be considered in the next assessment appearing in 2021.”

US intelligence warnings

Congressional testimony from two US government intelligence analysts on Wednesday seemed to corroborate Breakthrough’s grim climate change analysis.

Peter Kiemel, from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, told a House committee investigating the global effects of climate change on national security that it played a role in the bloody civil wars in Syria and Libya, and will do the same in the future.

Just prior to the outbreak of Syria’s devastating war in 2011, the region suffered one of the most severe droughts in its history, quadrupling rural-to-urban migration and causing food riots.

Climate change impacts on food and water systems were also “catalysts for social breakdown and conflict” in the Maghreb and the Sahel, contributing to the European migration crisis, Breakthrough’s paper said.

“We already have seen water crises exacerbate social unrest in and emigration from fragile states in the Middle East and North Africa,” said Kiemel.

“As the climate changes, disputes over water and access to arable land are likely to grow, prompting more such local conflicts.”

Rod Schoonover, a senior State Department analyst, told members of the House Intelligence Committee no nation would be immune from the ravages of climate change.

“Most countries, if not all, are already unable to fully respond to the risks posed by climate-linked hazards under the present conditions,” said Schoonover.

“Absent extensive mitigating factors or events, we see few plausible future scenarios where significant harm does not arise from the compounded effects of climate change.”

The Washington Post reported on Friday that Trump administration officials ordered the words “possibly catastrophic” erased from Schoonover’s written statement.

What can’t be deleted is a 2007 climate change security report titled The Age of Consequences, co-authored by former CIA director James Woolsey. Its wording leaves no doubt about the threat to the human species.

“Armed conflict between nations over resources, such as the Nile and its tributaries, is likely and nuclear war is possible. The social consequences range from increased religious fervour to outright chaos,” the study warned.

Race against time

While the immense challenge of abruptly ending fossil fuel use seems extremely daunting, there are reasons for hope.

Spratt and others noted the technology to shift away from fossil fuels to clean energy is already in place, and more could be done if government budgets were allocated towards decarbonisation.

“We have the technological and economic capacity. If we would have made the shift in 2009, we would be all right today,” said Spratt.

Climate watchers say what is desperately needed is political leadership worldwide to rein in C02-burning corporations and shift the global economic system to green technology.

WATCH

Has the media narrative changed around climate change?

Jonathan Patz, director of the Global Health Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, told USA Today the technology for a carbon-free economic system is already in place.

“We’re not waiting for solutions. We’re simply waiting for political will to understand that the solutions are here. Clean energy is not a matter of waiting, it’s a matter of implementing,” said Patz.

But with US President Donald Trump, who denies human-induced climate change and oversees the world’s largest economy, there is ample reason for serious concern.

The winds of change are blowing, however, as climate change protest movements sprout up worldwide.

In the US, the world’s second largest CO2 emitter after China, presidential candidate Joe Biden announced a $5 trillion climate proposal on Tuesday as part of his campaign for 2020. The same day, Hollywood actor Robert Downey Jr said he would launch a new hi-tech venture called the Footprint Coalition to combat climate change.

Guatemala migrants: Climate change driving exodus

On Thursday, US billionaire and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg said he would spend $500m in the “fight of our time” to move the US away from carbon energy.

Breakthrough’s paper stated “a massive global mobilisation” of resources was needed in the next decade to build a zero-emissions industrial system.

So can humanity save itself with the clock ticking down fast?

Admiral Chris Barrie – the former chief of Australia’s defence forces who wrote the foreword to Breakthrough’s paper – said human societies must act collectively to survive.

“A doomsday future is not inevitable, but without immediate drastic action, our prospects are poor.”

New details are beginning to emerge of what the casting process for Robert Pattinson, and it seems as though it was a fairly quick one.

According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Reeves had written his script for a thirty-something actor. Early in The Batman production process, he began to keep Robert Pattinson in mind, never knowing if the actor was even interested in the role. He was taken with the actor’s turns in Good Time and High Life, especially.

As production moved forward and it became time to get serious about casting, Reeves became interested in Nicholas Hoult as well following his appearance in the Academy Award-winning The Favourite.

In April Reeves and Warner Bros. executives met with both Pattinson and Hoult and decided that deals would be put in place for both before costume and screen tests were carried out. Following Pattinson’s appearance at the Cannes film festival, he flew back to California,  and both he and Hoult carried out their screen tests prior to the Memorial Day holiday.

Both actors did don a Batman costume from a previous film, but it has not been revealed which it was. Sources told THR that Reeves tested them to see how their eyes looked in the cowl, if they had the “specialness he wanted,” and so on. “(Reeves) wanted very specific things,” said one insider. “He knew what he was looking for.”

The calls to both actors were reportedly made on Thursday, May 30, and the deal was done. “It was quick,” one Warners insider said. “Quicker than normal.”

Pattinson will now move on to training and suit fitting with filming set to begin in early 2020.

The Batman is due to hit theaters on June 5, 2021.

]]>

(CNN)And breathe. The Drake curse is over. More poignantly, the rapper and the Toronto Raptors most recognizable fan quickly summed up the depth of feeling in the Canadian city — and Canada — after the team secured its first NBA title after defeating the Golden State Warriors.

“We did this off of heart,” said Drake. “We did this off of love. We willed this into existence.”
The Canadian music star has been ever-present during the Raptors’ run to the Finals, and his almost fanatical support has put noses out of joint across the league.
To commemorate the Raptors’ momentous win, Drake is also releasing two new songs — “Omertá” and “Money in the Grave.” But for Raptors fans everywhere, this hasn’t been an easy journey.

Long haul

“We’re going to make the NBA proud. We respect the trust that they’ve charged us with,” said John Bitove Jr., president of the yet-to-be-named professional basketball franchise in Toronto back in 1993.
Established on November 4, 1993 for a then-record expansion fee of $125 million, the Toronto Raptors were the 28th NBA franchise and the second Canadian franchise alongside the Vancouver Grizzlies.
While the Grizzlies relocated to Memphis, Tennessee in 2001, the Raptors remained in Toronto and for its fans, the team’s 2019 success has been a long time coming.
In the 24 seasons of their existence, the Raptors have made the playoffs 11 times — a good percentage on face value — but have only reached the NBA finals once (this season).
Although they’ve qualified for the playoffs for the past six seasons, the Raptors have been plagued by LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, being knocked out three years in a row by King James.
Following a 59-win season last season in which the Raptors reached the Eastern Conference finals, coach Dwane Casey — appointed in 2011 — was fired, days after being named NBA Coach of the Year.
Due to the improvement the Raptors made under Casey’s stewardship — they finished with a record of 23-43 in his first season and a record of 59-23 in his final season — the decision to replace him with his assistant, Nick Nurse, didn’t go down well with many.
However, what General Manager Bobby Webster did in the summer went a long way to rebuilding bridges.

New beginnings

DeMar DeRozan — who blossomed into a perennial All-Star for the Raptors — was traded in July 2018 to the San Antonio Spurs for 2014 Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard.
As well as acquiring Danny Green from the Spurs and Marc Gasol from the Grizzlies, Nurse entered his first season at the helm with a seriously kitted out team.
And they didn’t disappoint. Leonard and fan-favourite Kyle Lowry were named as All-Stars, Green finished with the fifth highest 3-point percentage in the league and Pascal Siakam developed from an up-and-comer to a flat-out superstar.
But it was during their playoff run that the Raptors, who receive a lot less media coverage compared to many of their American counterparts, really burst onto the scene.
From Drake’s almost comical reactions on the touchline and ability to get under the skin of MVP-hopeful Giannis Antetokounmpo to Leonard’s now-iconic game and series winning shot against the Philadelphia 76ers, the stars seemed to align for the Raptors.

Kawhi Leonard hits the game winning shot against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Canada’s team

There have been clips of viewing parties for the Raptors games all across Canada, and for Tas Melas — a fan of the Toronto NBA team and co-host of “The Starters” — the outpouring of support for the Toronto-based team has made him even more proud of being Canadian.
“Even as somebody who supported team for a long time, I didn’t know that this amount of support existed out there,” Melas said.
“More people in Canada watched Game 5 of the NBA finals than every other program this year, including the Super Bowl. It’s shocking really.
“Even though there’s been Raptors fan bases online that are so adamant about the team, but for pop up parties to happen from the Prairie provinces to the Atlantic provinces, it’s a head-scratcher.
“It’s something which bonds all the cities just like in London, England. I’m sure there are cities in England that aren’t really fans of London. And that’s the same sort of scenario in Canada.

Drake cheers on stage as Toronto Raptors beat the Golden State Warriors in Game Six of the NBA Finals, during a viewing party in Jurassic Park.

Journalist Mike Bossetti — who has covered the Raptors for past four seasons — echoes Melas’ incredulity that the Raptors are now so popular and says that the lack of any other Canadian NBA franchise helps people to unite behind one common goal.
“Every team in the NBA has a city they represent. The Raptors have a country,” he said.
“It’s truly been remarkable to see the entire nation of Canada rally behind just one team. Over 50% of Canada has tuned in to at least one portion of the NBA Finals.
“Go 15 minutes in America and you might find different fan bases colliding. Up in Canada, there’s only one love.”

Starting something new

The Raptors opponents in the Finals — the Warriors — have been the team to beat over the past five seasons, winning the NBA title three times.
Behind the brilliance of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, “Dub-Nation” have reached the Finals in each of the last five seasons.
But for Jordan Hayles — who’s supported the Raptors since he was 11-years-old — the wait for the Raptors victory has made it even sweeter.
“For the city, it is probably one of the biggest moments to happen really since the Blue Jays won (in 1993),” he said, referring to the MLB team.

Toronto Raptors fans celebrate atop a bus after the team beat the Golden State Warriors.

“I think it’s even more important because when you look at it from a generational standpoint, it’s always been the Maple Leafs,” added Hayles in reference to the Canadian ice hockey team.
“The Leafs are a 100-year-old team and they won all their titles before television. The Blue Jays won when TV was obviously prominent, but they won before the internet era.
“And when you have the technology age that we live in, at the end of this decade moving on into 2020s, then the Raptors are a millennial team. They have been around for 24 years. So, you have a lot of generations coming together and witnessing this.”

An attractive proposition

When NBA players are deciding where they’ll be playing next during free agency, the past success (or lack of) for the franchises trying to claim the signature of that player can be a key factor.
The Warriors themselves were that team before they won their title in 2015, having only reached the playoffs eight times in the previous 37 seasons.
Melas thinks that winning the title this season will make Toronto an attractive place to play for star talents.
“They are already an A-list organization that’s been proven in the last few years, but this would absolutely cement them as an organization that’s not going anywhere and that is a free agent destination.

Kawhi Leonard celebrates his teams win over the Golden State Warriors in Game Six.

“And it also is going to increase the amount of kids and interest in basketball throughout the country as well.
“These parties that are happening, win or lose, I do think there’s people watching the game that maybe have never watched a NBA game before or weren’t all that interested.
“So I expect the gyms and the outdoor courts to be more and more packed as these next few years go on because of the Raptors and how appealing they are and how appealing winning is and how magnetic this team is.
“And again, people just love these dudes.”

‘Waiting for this moment’

Suna Bari — a Raptors fan whose earliest memories include watching Damon Stoudamire — believes this title will have a dramatic effect on the Raptors’ status and also their fans.
“The Raptors have always been the team in the league having to prove themselves; the underdog; and I think bringing this title home is enough proof that we don’t only belong in this league, but we’re good enough to compete against some of the greatest players in the world AND win,” she said.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment for over 20 years. These last few years have been a wave of emotions, watching the Raptors push through the playoffs and inch closer every year only to fall short of the finish line.
“To win this title is to fulfil a childhood dream. Seven-year-old me is sitting at the edge of her seat, dripped in Raptors gear and full of emotions.”

Aeternus Steel Holdings Ltd, a joint venture between local company Integrus Group and Dubai investors Cassia Group, has won the bid for the now-shuttered ArcelorMittal steel mill in Point Lisas.

The winner was announced today.

The plant was shuttered in March 2016, beginning liquidation proceedings soon after to pay off its reported $1.3 billion debt – most of which was owed to its parent, the ArcelorMittal group, which is headquartered in Luxembourg.

Speaking to Newsday, liquidator Christopher Kelshall confirmed the name of the winning bidder and said the process has now “moved through to the next stages.” “The intention is to restart in phases but (Aeternus) is interested in recommissioning the plant. It will be done over time,” Kelshall told Newsday in a phone call. He said he was still bound by confidentiality agreements, so could not much, including the value of the bid.

This is the second bid round for the plant. The first was in September 2017, but after months of waiting for approvals from relevant government authorities, the preferred bidder, Nu-Iron, a subsidiary of American steel giant Nucor, pulled out of the process. The new bid round began in January and ended in March.

Losing out was Macarri Steel Holdings Ltd, a consortium made up of local and international investors, including former steelworkers, who had petitioned to be allowed to bid and restart the plant. Speaking to Newsday this afternoon, director Unanan Persad confirmed the company’s bid – estimated to be US$27 million – was unsuccessful.

Newsday also spoke with Jai Leladharsingh, manager of the Couva-Point Lisas Chamber of Commerce, who said the organisation was not aware of who won the bid but welcomed any attempt to restart the mill. “We would be happy if the plant (restarted), earning foreign exchange for the country and hiring the former steelworkers. It would also stimulate economic activity in the Couva/California region.”
