New details are beginning to emerge of what the casting process for Robert Pattinson, and it seems as though it was a fairly quick one.

According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Reeves had written his script for a thirty-something actor. Early in The Batman production process, he began to keep Robert Pattinson in mind, never knowing if the actor was even interested in the role. He was taken with the actor’s turns in Good Time and High Life, especially.

As production moved forward and it became time to get serious about casting, Reeves became interested in Nicholas Hoult as well following his appearance in the Academy Award-winning The Favourite.

In April Reeves and Warner Bros. executives met with both Pattinson and Hoult and decided that deals would be put in place for both before costume and screen tests were carried out. Following Pattinson’s appearance at the Cannes film festival, he flew back to California, and both he and Hoult carried out their screen tests prior to the Memorial Day holiday.

Both actors did don a Batman costume from a previous film, but it has not been revealed which it was. Sources told THR that Reeves tested them to see how their eyes looked in the cowl, if they had the “specialness he wanted,” and so on. “(Reeves) wanted very specific things,” said one insider. “He knew what he was looking for.”

The calls to both actors were reportedly made on Thursday, May 30, and the deal was done. “It was quick,” one Warners insider said. “Quicker than normal.”

Pattinson will now move on to training and suit fitting with filming set to begin in early 2020.
